How to improve the quality of Wild Red Reishi (Ganoderma Tsugae).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
   1. Harvesting Time
Harvesting Time:  June 1st to July 1st. (South of PA Region)
Harvesting Time:  June 15th to July 15th. (North of PA Region)
Purchasing Time: June 1st to August 1st.
Estimated Reishi harvest time is from June to July.
During this time the Reishi will be in its prime condition
Note: Harvesting time can be as early as May for warmer climate places
The prime condition means no borers and no mold at all. The surface is red and the underside is milky white. Also, the fragrance of Reishi must be there as well. However, Reishi can be harvested as long as they are in good condition.
Reishi also is known as Hemlock Varnish Shelf, tends to grow on conifers, especially hemlocks. During the growing season of Wild Reishi, the color will be light yellow, light red and white at the beginning. Then it turns to red and finally to purple(too late for harvest). Reishi should be prepared for harvest when the outer white edge is about 5% of the entire Reishi. When the Reishi surface grows to 95% red, it needs to be harvested within 2 to 10 days to prevent borers from damaging them. Otherwise, it will go bad and it will be more likely to have borers, mold, and the disappearance of fragrance. If the Reishi goes bad, then it can’t be purchased. Reishi should be harvested from the current season only.  It is important to harvest the Reishi before the borers burrow into them and damage the inside.
Below photos show the Reishi are ready for harvest immediately:
Two pictures below showing the percentage of the white edge on Reishi is more than 50%.  This means it is too early in the season to harvest.   When the Reishi surface grows to 95% red, it needs to be harvested within 2 to 10 days to prevent borers from damaging them.
It is important to harvest the Reishi before the borers burrow into them and damage the inside.
One thing interesting about Wild Reishi:  as beautiful as they are, none of them are exactly the same.  I bet you won’t be able to find two identical ones.
2. Purchasing Requirements
Reishi must be harvested whole with the entire stem of the Reishi attached to get the best pricing. If the Reishi is wider than 5 inches, it must have some green moss attached. It is very important to keep the green moss attached to the Reishi to get the best pricing.  Some reishi does not have a full stem growing from the tree.  You should still keep a little bit of the green moss at the end part.  The cultivated Reishi does not have green moss because they are grown in sawdust.  We DO NOT buy cultivated Reishi.  We only buy 100% wild Reishi harvested within United States of America.
If the Reishi is under 5 inches, please do not harvest it.  This will preserve and protects the Reishi's population.
Photos below show the tree barks and green moss attached to the Reishi.  A small amount of tree bark attached to Reishi is acceptable.  The tree bark should be about 1 coin thickness, and the length of the bark should also be less than 1 inch. It is also acceptable without any tree bark, but there should be some green moss attached to the Reishi.
The photo below shows the Reishi's underside is creamy white which is the most desirable condition.
The photo below shows the Reishi with too much tree barks, the price will not be as high:
Reishi with a virus on the underside price will be decreased by 50 - 70%!  See photo below:
Reishi from late-season harvest during fall and winter is missing the Reishi fragrance.  The underside of the Reishi has a serious virus and brown color, the surface of the Reishi is a purple color they are not acceptable for purchase.
See photos below:
The photos below show the Reishi's inside is damaged by insects. The borers feed and make their homes inside the Reishi. Reishi with borers inside is not acceptable.  We do not buy them. Keep them in the woods to preserve the Reishi population.
   3. Drying Process
 It takes approximately 4 lbs of fresh Reishi to dry to 1 lb dried Reishi.
**Special Reminder: During harvesting and the first day of the drying process DO NOT touch the underside with your hand or other objects.  The brown color on the underside will hurt the price. The price will be $1-2 less for the Reishi with markings on the underside.
This is the correct way of drying. It has a nice underside with white color.
**Special Reminder: After harvesting the Reishi do not store them in an unventilated container or plastic overnight.  Also, do not store in a car for too long after harvesting. It will cause the Reishi to go bad and turned purple-black color.  Start the drying process ASAP after harvesting.
Reishi below was harvested on the same day from the same location. The first two photos show the Reishi was left in the cardboard for 12 hours without ventilation by mistake and turned black and purple and bad smell.
